Prijs Letterkunde

Each year the province of West-Flanders hands out a notable literary prize within a chosen discipline. For their 2016 edition of the contest, which focussed on the discipline of prose, they asked me to illustrate and design the campaign.

I decided to base my drawing around the concept of a writers desk. I like the idea that this minimal piece of furniture – wether it is a desk, your kitchen table or a counter at a local coffee shop – functions as a portal to the creative mind of the writer. Is it not the most enviable skill, to be able to discover the world without ever having to leave that little table?

Parallel to the narrative form that characterizes prose, I chose to make a narrative campaign visual that invites a lingering eye and encourages one to ponder on the story within it.

Because the visual for the campaign needed to be used in both vertical and horizontal formats in both print and digital media, I decided to make a flexible drawing to ensure that the same image could be used in different format ratios while maintaining an optimal composition.
